Wow…it’s hard to believe that we are standing on the cusp of 2012!  I’m excited about the new year, thinking about what sort of changes I’d like to make.  It’s a time for new things; I can feel it in the air.  I’m ready to learn Spanish, work on my writing, read the classics, rejoin the gym and rediscover the body I used to have (I know it’s still in there somewhere!), buy a bicycle and just HAVE MORE FUN.

Edith Lovejoy Pierce said, “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” What are you going to write in your book this year?

I wish for my readers a year of trying new things. Learn a new language or pick up a new hobby. Write poetry or start journaling. Paint with acrylics, cook with cardamon, discover a new author. Keep growing, keep changing. Eleanor Roosevelt said it best, “I think, at a child’s birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity.” Here’s to an interesting year!

As for myself, I’m closing some doors so I can open some new ones.  This will be my last blog post for a while…Thrifty Girl Vintage needs a break!  I’ve enjoyed this year and learned so much from blogging.  It’s given me confidence, new computer skills and the ability to mix and match my wardrobe to the nth degree!

It’s also given me wonderful new friends!  I will check back along with you guys at your blogs and see what you’ve been up, too.  I’m still toying with the idea of starting a new blog encompassing fashion AND a positive lifestyle and if I go in that direction, you guys will be the first to know.

I’m also especially thankful for my local readers!  You guys have been such an encouragement to me when you see me out and tell me that you read my blog.  It’s meant a lot!

I want to thank everyone for reading…for commenting…for following.  You could be doing a million different things with your day, so I appreciate the time you spend with me.  I’ve said it before, “A writer writes with the hope of being read” and I thank you for giving me that.

That being said, I will still be posting on my Thrifty Girl Vintage Facebook page.  You can find it here.  Check it out and keep me posted on what’s going on!

I wish you all a Beautiful New Year!  I’m serious about having fun with it!  What sort of new mischief could YOU get into this year?  Remember these wise words from Mark Twain:  “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did.  So throw off bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore, dream, discover!”

I’m closing this blog post with some of my favorite looks of the past year:

First off, let me say that IN MY BOOK…TACKY IS A GOOD THING!  And if it has PINK FLAMINGOS on it, that’s even BETTER!

How about a whole CHORUS LINE OF DANCING PINK FLAMINGOS wishing you a MERRY CHRISTMAS?

I carried my Christmas shopping purse again!  Today, I’m wearing my fur on my purse!

I finally bought some colorful tights from We Love Colors!  This shade is fluorescent pink.

I’m wishing everyone a happy and healthy Christmas season!  I hope you and your family have a beautiful and blessed Christmas!  I’m excited about having my kids all home from school.  Out of all our blessings, the blessings of friends and family are the best!

This has been a crazy week or two.  I had to hunt up a couple of years worth of school information, volunteer work hours and awards information for my youngest son so he could fill out an application for a summer program he’s applying to.  I’ve got my house all decorated and now I’m knee deep in Christmas shopping.  I’m taking a blogging break to enjoy this Christmas!  So I want to wish you and yours a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

What I’m Wearing:  Allyson Whitmore Christmas top with pink flamingos,  Burke’s Outlet.  Derek Heart red fleece cardigan with hood, Burke’s Outlet.  Eddie Bauer denim skirt, Eddie Bauer Outlet Store.  Fluorescent pink tight, We Love Colors. Red Christmas purse with white fur trim, thrifted.  Ugg boots, B&H Shoes.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL MY FRIENDS…I WISH YOU PLENTY OF FOOD, FUN, FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

I’m linking up this week with Pretty Shiny Sparkly for Bloggers Do it Better: Military Chic and Silverstyle for Trending through the Decades:  Tunics.  Yes…I multitasked by wearing a military vest over a tunic!

I’m standing in front of a white wicker shelf that I thrifted for $30!  All the white organizational stuff came from Walmart and I’ve had awhile.  I’m TRYING to get organized.  We all know how that is.  The black and white photos are from when my kids were little.  I used to take a roll of black and white photos about once a year.

I am thankful for all my readers and I hope that each and every one of you have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!

What I’m Wearing:  rue21 military vest and camo scarf, Cato gray tunic that I thrifted, Faded Glory jeans, Ugg shoes from B&H Shoes (better than house shoes…I’m telling you.)

The first thing I thought of when I saw this week’s celebrity inspiration  for inspiration monday was layering my short off the shoulder t-shirt over another longer top to get a similar look.  First, here’s the inspiration:

Now here’s my very non-literal interpretation!
I love these short off the shoulder tees.  I had been searching for something like these for a while when I found them at rue21.  I brought home a black and a gray one.
I know my name is Thrifty Girl Vintage, but remember GIRL is my middle name and sometimes this GIRL just has to splurge on something special.  This year it was boots.  I bought these black Harley Davidson Motorcycle Boots after wanting a pair for years.  And they are wonderful!!!
I’m linking up with two birds for inspiration monday and Not Dead Yet Style for Visible Monday.  Nothing makes you feel visible like walking tall in a pair of great boots!
What I’m Wearing:  rue21 black short off the shoulder tee, Eddie Bauer blue knit top from Eddie Bauer Outlet Store, thrifted denim skirt, black tights from Target, Harley Davidson motorcycle boots from B&H Shoes.  Green and blue necklace and earrings, gift.

Answer:  I have no idea…but I LIKE IT!

inspiration monday, Visible Monday

daily outfit, inspiration monday, Visible MondayI was inspired by this look on Kelly Ripa for inspiration monday at two birds.

I was pondering between a black sweater and a black blazer when I remembered this Jessica Simpson poncho/capelet thing I got on sale at the end of the season.  You know how it is when you buy things at the end of a season.  There is all this waiting and pining and then finally the weather gets right and you can break it out.
I loaded on the arm candy.

black, white and yellow, accessorizingSome of my loves are plastic jewelry and gingham.  I’m linking these finds up with Silverstyle for Trending through the Decades:  Accessories.

Indian Summer

by debbie

There are always some unseasonably warm days in early November where I live.  The old timers called these days “Indian Summer.”  Today was one of those days.  Warm, sunshiny, and with no jacket required.

In lieu of a jacket, I used this scarf for a wrap and pinned it together with a thrifted vintage pin.  I’m linking up my vintage find with spunky chateau for Thursdays are for Thrifters.

blue dotted scarfI got the idea from a scarf with buttons sewn on so you could wear it as a jacket.

I love, love, love wearing black and white with color.

What I’m Wearing:  Blue dotted scarf worn as wrap, Van Heusen Outlet Store.  Vintage blue pin, thrifted.  Zebra belt, rue21.  Zebra shoes, Payless.  Talbots black sleeveless knit top, thrifted.  Zebra earrings, local store.

Mixing Prints

by debbie

One morning before the leaves changed, I woke up and wanted to wear something completely different that didn’t really match at all but somehow went together.  This is what I came up with.

Happily the skirt, shoes and belt were thrifted.  I bought my top at one of those end of the season sales at Belk’s.

mixing patternsI didn’t notice this until later, but the diagonal design in the top is repeated in the skirt.

I love the unusual felt flower belt.  I think you could even entwine this with a scarf somehow for an original look.

I wish everyone a beautiful fall weekend.  I think I hear Goodwill calling my name!!!

“I feel good about taking things to Goodwill and actually, I do like shopping at Goodwill. It’s so cheap that it feels like a library where I am just checking things out for awhile until I decide to take them back.” ~ April Foiles

I found this tribal print skirt thanks to a casual conversation with a clerk at Goodwill.  I had discovered a Goodwill I had never been to before in the college town where my two oldest go to school.  The clerk was super helpful and gave me a card with the addresses of all the Goodwills in the area and there were quite a few.  I found this skirt at one of the other stores on the list.  I’m going to remember this tip when I’m scouting out Goodwills in other towns.

Today’s outfit is a combination of thrifting, only one dollar stores and discount retail.  It’s definitely highlighting the thrifty side of me.

only one dollar

All the jewelry today came from an only one dollar store.  A second only one dollar store, “Dollar Tree” just opened in our town this past weekend.  Living in a small town you get excited about things like that.  I bought a zen garden for one dollar.  It had a tiny bag of sand, and five small rocks and a miniature rake…too cute.

“Learn to be happy about small things…after all, they make up most of our lives.”  – Thrifty Girl Vintage

Here’s a close-up of the pattern mixing.  Both the skirt and top came from Goodwill…just months and miles apart.

I’ve literally had these shoes for years and even though they’re comfortable I don’t really wear them that much.  Maybe that should change.  They came from Payless.

My whole outfit today is priced:  skirt, $3.  top, $2.50. bracelets and earrings, $1 each.  shoes, between $10 ad $20…it’s been so long ago I forgot.  So I’m totaling around $18.50 – $28.50, depending on the price of the shoes.
